International Day of Languages

posted 9 Oct 2018, 03:55 by N Nelson

Year 6 pupils from Oakfield created friendship bracelets to celebrate International Day of Languages.

Our students responded by sending back thank you notes in Spanish and telling the Year 6s a little bit about themselves (also in Spanish!).

They worked really hard to produce some great letters and pictures. Oakfield Languages teacher Claire Wright was blown away by their efforts

STEM Year 6 Family Learning

posted 17 Jul 2018, 05:53 by N Nelson

Last week families of Year 6 students who will be joining the academy in September were invited by Mrs Baxter and Mr Nicholson to the STEM Inspiration room.

Families were given an introduction to computing, learning that a computer is an electronic device that takes and input from a user and processes to an output. This can be applied to phones, tablets, laptops, robots and much more.

Mr Nicholson explained how there is a shortage of workers with digital skills and how learning to code is a great career choice for both boys and girls.

Once an understanding of the real world applications of computers was established, participants went on to learn how we program these inputs and outputs. A BBC Micro:bit was used to demonstrate physical computing on a smaller scale. Families were able to program one of the input buttons on the Micro:bit to output their names or pictures they had created on the tiny screens.

We hope everyone had a good time and learnt some new skills.

Trend Youth Cafe - Year 6 to Year 7 Transition Support

posted 8 Jun 2016, 02:59 by Nat Admin   [ updated 15 Jun 2016, 06:16 ]

Message from Trend Cafe regarding provision that they are offering to Year 6 students to support their transition into Secondary School in September:

"Trend Youth Cafe is a Footprint Trust project, a charity supported by the Isle of Wight Council Youth Offer, to provide a safe space in the centre of Newport for young people to spend time, socialising, relaxing or doing homework. We offer a range of free and discounted drinks and snacks, and provide the opportunity to take part in upcycled craft activities.

Trend is open from 3:30pm to 6;00pm every school day, for young people aged between 10 and 19. We are encouraging young people who are currently in Year 6 to pop in before the end of term, and bring their parents to find out more about us.  We provide a safe environment to spend time with other students from the various Secondary schools on the Island, and can assist in developing independence skills, whether that is walking home alone, meeting a parent/carer in town or while waiting for a bus home.  We hope that knowing that there is a safe place to go, and a friendly face to talk to, will provide reassurance for parents and young people during the first few weeks of transition.

We have a Facebook Page, Twitter Feed and we're on Instagram, where we share details of our forthcoming activities and showcase the crafts we produce.

We look forward to seeing you soon!"
